Location

Location

Bella Vista Napier Motel is situated in a Central CBD location, four minutes' walk from town. Marine Parade fronts onto a sweeping stretch of the Pacific Ocean from which we are located only a matter of metres; the beach walks and nearby restaurants and attractions give the city a real holiday resort atmosphere.

For conferences and special events, the Napier RSA is right across the road. The War Memorial Conference Centre is a pleasant three quarters of a kilometre stroll along the seaside walkway. The Municipal Theatre is also sometimes used as a conference facility and Bella Vista Motel is an easy walk from this venue too.

For sports events, we are less than one kilometre from McLean and Nelson parks, and at the end of the activities freshen up at your motel which is within 300 metres of watering holes and eateries for all tastes, while a half kilometre will get the "culturally minded" to the Napier Municipal Theatre.

Look out your window during Art Deco week and you will be convinced you have been transported to the 1930s, such is the number of passers-by in period costume and vintage cars. We are right in the midst of it all!

Best known today for its art deco architecture and magnificent wines, Napier and the Hawke's Bay region are also rich in Maori culture. Newly developed cycling trails are proving to be an increasingly popular attraction and activity.

Pre-European history of this region dates back to the 12th century when the scared waka (canoe) Takitimu arrived. On board was the high priest, Ruawharo who settled overlooking Mahia Beach north of Napier.

In 1769 Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMS Endeavour were probably the first Europeans to set eyes on the East Coast. Cook named the bay after the lord of the admiralty. Traders, whalers and missionaries began moving into the province early in the 1800s. Napier was established in the 1850s, and was named for a British soldier who fought in India.  Many streets carry names associated with the colonial era of the British Indian Empire. Others take their names from famous artists and literary figures.

Gannet Colony

The world’s largest accessible mainland gannet colony is south of Napier at Cape Kidnappers. Gannets have a wingspan of up to 2m and are designed for graceful flying and diving from great heights into the sea to catch fish. The region also has many beautiful public gardens and nature walks, including the Te Mata Peak track and the Lake Waikaremoana track.
