We are easy to find on Heuheu Street, just 3.5 hours travel from Auckland.

Bella Vista Motel Taupo is situated on the fringe of the Lake Taupo town centre. This location means it is just a short stroll to the lakefront, cafes, restaurants and shopping district. Jump into your car and it is just 5 minutes to the famous Huka Falls area where you will find not only the falls but a number of attractions, including Huka Falls Jet, Huka Prawn Park,  and Honey Hive.

Further down SH 1 are the Wairakei International Golf Course and Wairakei Terraces Maori Cultural Centre. For those wishing to visit Tongariro National Park for skiing, trout fishing or tramping, it is just a 1.5 hour drive away.

No matter what the weather there are a number of things to get you out of your motel room and exploring the region.

Huka Falls

These impressive falls are just a short stroll from the Huka Falls Car Park. Head out for a scenic walk along the banks of the Waikato River, the options include a walk around the waterfall or two longer track options. The waterfall-viewing walk is family friendly and easy for all ages. Take time to explore the many lookout points at Huka Falls, one of the most visited natural attractions in New Zealand.

Taupo Tandem Skydiving

One of New Zealand’s largest and most respected skydiving companies, Taupo Tandem Skydiving offers a beautiful location to jump. The views across Lake Taupo and onto the Tongariro National Park are breathtaking. Choose 9,000, 12,000 or a 15,000-foot jump.

Taupo Bungy & Cliffhanger

While you’re there check out Taupo Cliffhanger, an extreme swing letting swingers take in the view while zipping through nature.

Lava Glass

If you are after an insight into the glass blowing world, then this one’s for you. Lava Glass comprises of a gallery, glass blowing studio, sculpture garden and cafe complex, it’s both enjoyable and beautiful.

Huka Prawn Park

The iconic Huka Prawn Park is fun for all ages, stroll around the complex, view the nursery and hatchery, hand feed baby prawns, go prawn fishing or dine at the scrumptious restaurant.

Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings

Only accessible by water, these 14metre high rock carvings are a splendid sight to see. Theses carvings took over 4 years to complete and were finished in 1980. Since then people can’t get enough, view these on a Taupo cruise, by kayak or floatplane.

Taupo Museum

This is a great local museum full of Maori culture - including a traditional waka, local Taupo history, logging history and various other exhibitions. Well maintained and staffed by knowledgeable locals.

Wairakei Terraces

This thermal pools and spa complex will ease away the aches and pains. Enjoy the healing qualities of the therapeutic waters (long been used by Maori for healing and bathing) Come along for a dip in the pools, a Maori Cultural experience or a spa treatment.

Taupo Golf Courses

There are a number of quality golf courses in the Taupo region – try out Kinloch Golf Club, Wairakei Golf Course, Chateau Tongariro 9 Hole Golf Course, Mangakino Golf Club. Also don’t forget Taupo mini golf, Taupo FootGolf or the Hole in One challenge.

Lake Taupo Hole in One Challenge

Located centrally on the shore of Lake Taupo, have a go hitting the golf ball into the hole on the floating pontoon. The prize for getting a hole in one is $10,000 and they give that away on average once every two weeks – you got to be in to win!!

Mt Tauhara Walk

This short walk (average 1.5 hrs to the summit) is a lovely way to get your bearings of the Taupo region. Enjoy walking over the rolling green fields, then onto the trees with lots of birdlife. Upon reaching the summit you’ll be rewarded with 360 degree vies over Taupo.

Taupo Jet Boating

Wanting an adrenaline kick? Some spins, speeds and turns? Taupo is a great place to partake in jet boating. There are a few options to choose from – Check out Huka Falls Jet, Rapids Jet or New Zealand Riverjet, each offer a different and unique experience.

 

Cruise Lake Taupo

There are many ways to get out on the water and experience Lake Taupo in all its glory. Options include jumping onboard a sailboat, catamaran, charter boat, kayaks or stand up paddleboard. There’s too many to list them all, but check out: Chris Jolly Outdoors, Sail Barbary, and Ernest Kemp Cruises.

Rafting in Taupo

Head to Rafting New Zealand for a great day out! Have a go rafting on over 50 exciting rapids, you’ll find yourself heading through a volcanic gorge, exploring a hidden waterfall (jump optional) and getting the adrenaline pumping.

Biking & Cycling in Taupo

Taupo offers a range of options for those keen on two wheels – Have a go on the internationally recognised tracks and trails. The 71km Great Lake trail is a popular option, also Huka Trail, Craters MTB Park, the list goes on. There are plenty of places to head for bike hire and shuttles if you don’t have your bike.

The Taupo Market

Head to Northcote Reserve on the lake front every Sunday morning to buy the best fruit and vegetables, local art and crafts. Rain or shine the locals will be waiting.

Huka Honey Hive

The importance of bees and honey have long been acknowledged, head along the Honey Hive to taste local honey, mead & liqueurs. View live beehives; discover health & wellness products and the honey-based skincare. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a honey ice cream.

Taupo Indoor Climbing Wall

There is a fantastic indoor climbing wall located at the Taupo Events Centre. It’s suited to all ages and levels; with climbs graded from 12 to 29. A great options for a rainy day.

Aratiatia Rapids

Made famous by Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, the Aratiatia Rapids are formed when the dam gates of the Waikato River are opened a few times a day. Arrive a few minutes prior to release to view the rapids filling up. Make your way to one of the lookout points on the high rock bluffs. Please note this is NOT a safe place for swimming.

Day Trips From Taupo

Tongariro National Park 

The Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's oldest National Park and has dual World Heritage status for its cultural significance to Maori and it's remarkable volcanic features. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely regarded as New Zealand's best one day hike and offers great diversity from snow-capped volcanoes, crater lakes to rainforest and waterfalls. Mt Ruapheu hosts the two North Island ski fields.

Napier 

This is a charming seaside city with perfectly preserved Art Deco buildings. Hawkes Bay is the oldest wine growing region in New Zealand. It is also home to the spectacular Cape Kidnappers golf course.

Waitomo Caves

The remarkable underground labyrinth of caves offers a landscape of underground rivers and soaring caverns twinkling with glow-worms

Rotorua

​Full of geothermal wonders such as geysers, boiling mudpools and silica terraces the area has much to offer. You can also take in one of Rotorua's many Maori Cultural experiences.

Introducing your hosts, Water & Ingrid

Kia ora Koutou  

Water & Ingrid met while studying business management, and after graduating, they started working together in the hospitality industry. Water has a Diploma in Hotel Management and has managed two motels on her own at different times. Ingrid has been Water’s assistant, helping out in different areas. Together, they make a great team.

Water and Ingrid both love Taupo and very excited to have the chance to work and live in such a great destination.

Even though we’re relatively new to the industry, we’re keen to keep learning, improving, and making sure our guests have an amazing experience. Great Lake Taupo, Your Destination 

Taupo sits on an active geothermal region, with 3 active volcanos in its proximity and many more geothermal attractions including Crater of The Moon, Huka Falls and Wairakei Terrace nearby. Maori settlement can be dated back to 700 years ago. One prominent Maori culture Taupo has is the Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay.

Taupo has so much to offer visitors with the Great Lake as the centre piece and the iconic Huka falls, you can witness the Phenomenon of natural hydro power with more than 220,000 litres of water per second barrelling over the 11 metre high waterfall

Being the adventure capital of the North Island, there are plenty of things to do in Taupo. From Skydiving to Whitewater Rafting, Mountain Biking to Car Racing, there is nothing about the town is dull. Winter time, Taupo welcomes ski bunnies to 2 of the North Island main ski fields- Whakapapa & Turoa.

Bella Vista Taupo support a local grassroot initiative- Greening Taupo. Its vision is to improve the Taupo environment for the people and native wildlife.

We will donate $1 each time you ask us not to service your room. We collected over $1000 last year alone to support this worthy cause.

We wish to do our bit to help protect Taupo and safeguard its natural beauty so that it is preserved for many generations to come. 

The few initiatives we are undertaking to be a sustainable business includes:

Recycling waste, recording carbon output, source supplies from sustainable producers, installed water conservation devices in all rooms, planted native plants to attract native birds, using energy saving light bulbs, and support a local environmental initiative.
