Our Top 3 Must-Visit Wineries in Nelson

Posted by on

Located at the top of the South Island, the Nelson Tasman region is not only home to the iconic Abel Tasman National Park, but is also celebrated for its fantastic wine scene. Though smaller in size, this wine region benefits from a mild climate, rolling hills, and calm waters, producing consistently high-quality wines year-round.

From vibrant Sauvignon Blancs and rich Chardonnays to bright Pinot Noirs and fruity Aromatics, Nelson’s wineries offer something to delight every palate. With over 22 wineries and 10 cellar doors to explore, wine lovers are truly spoiled for choice.

While visiting every cellar door might be a challenge, we’ve curated a list of our top 3 must-visit wineries, to ensure you experience the very best Nelson has to offer.

To make your experience even more seamless, make Bella Vista Nelson your travel base, known for offering quality Nelson motel accommodation, just minutes from the region’s best wineries.

For a complete experience, pair your wine with a platter from Harvest Kitchen, the on-site eatery. Featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the platters are thoughtfully created to complement the wines. Choose a spot on the terrace or in the garden, where you can relax and enjoy stunning vineyard views that stretch across the peaceful Nelson countryside.

2. Neudorf Vineyards

For the passionate wine enthusiasts out there, you may like to join one of the guided tours of the gravity-fed winery. These are available on Friday mornings at 11 a.m. and are led by the Winemaker-in-residence, Brett Bermingham. They provide an in-depth look at the innovative winemaking process. The tour includes wine samples selected from tank and barrel and lasts approximately 45 minutes.

The Ultimate 5-Day Taupo Itinerary: Local Tips for the Best Sights and Experiences

Posted by on

In the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, the Taupo region has it all – from lakefront walks and geothermal wonders, to outdoor adventures and relaxing spots to unwind. With so much to see and do, we don't think a weekend getaway is enough to experience it all.

To make the most of your time here, we’ve put together a fantastic five-day itinerary, covering key activities, local eats, and top sights, all within easy access of Bella Vista Taupo. Our motel is conveniently located in the city centre, giving you easy access to explore Taupo, with everything just a short walk or drive away.

So, if you're after a bit of adventure, a relaxing escape, or both, Bella Vista Taupo is the perfect destination. Let’s get started!

Day 1: Arriving in Taupo – Get Settled and Enjoy the Lakefront

Afternoon

Welcome to Taupo! After a morning of travel, you’ve finally arrived at this stunning Great Lake. The friendly team at Bella Vista Taupo Motel is ready to check you in and help you feel right at home.

When you’re ready, stretch those legs with a short 10-minute walk through the town centre. With so many shops, cafes, and restaurants within walking distance, it can be hard to know where to start! For a late lunch, we recommend Cafe Baku, a local favourite known for its fantastic coffee, delicious cabinet food and lakefront views.

Once you’ve eaten, why not take a leisurely stroll along the lakefront to soak in the views? Don’t forget to snap a photo with the iconic #LOVETAUPO sign! While you’re at the waterfront, check out the Lake Taupo Hole in One Challenge, where you can test your swing by hitting golf balls into the lake and aiming for floating targets. Whether you choose to participate or just watch, it’s sure to provide plenty of entertainment.

Evening

After an afternoon of exploring and settling into your Taupo accommodation, it’s time for your first dinner. Vine Eatery & Bar is just a quick 10-minute stroll away and offers delicious tapas-style plates and great local wines—perfect for a laid-back meal. Afterward, head back to Bella Vista for a restful night because tomorrow is all about discovering Taupo’s geothermal wonders!

Day 2: Dive into Taupo’s Geothermal Side

Morning

Start your day with breakfast at the motel, then make your way to Huka Falls, just a 10-minute drive from Bella Vista. Here, you’ll witness the impressive power of the Waikato River as it surges through a narrow ravine to create one of New Zealand’s most spectacular waterfalls. From the glacier-blue water to the unbelievable force, it makes for one of the most incredible things to see in all the Taupo region.

From there, it’s only a 5-minute drive to the fascinating Craters of the Moon geothermal park. This otherworldly landscape features a 60 minute boardwalk where you can see steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and craters, up close. This area feels like something out of a sci-fi movie and is just waiting to be explored.

Afternoon

After a morning of appreciating nature's wonders, it's time to head back down to town to grab a bite to eat—we'd recommend Kefi Cafe if you like Greek food! Once you’re fueled up, it’s the perfect time to explore Taupo on two wheels. With plenty of scenic trails and bike rentals available, you can take the afternoon at your own pace.

For a leisurely ride, the Lion's Walk, also known as the Great Lake Pathway, is a fantastic option. This nearly 13 km trail winds along the edge of Lake Taupo, offering stunning views of Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe, and Mt. Ruapehu—a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

Evening

After a full day of adventure, it’s time to wind down with dinner—Taupo style. Grab a takeaway (Pauly’s Diner is highly recommended for epic burgers and fried chicken!) and head to the Taupo Harbour to pick up your Doughboat. This unique 90-minute experience lets you enjoy your dinner on the water, floating along the lake as the sun sets. What a way to end an unforgettable day in Taupo!

Day 3: Get Out on the Lake and See Taupo’s Sights

Morning

After a light breakfast at Bella Vista, it’s time to hit the water! Just a quick 5-minute drive from the hotel, you’ll find the pick-up point for a scenic cruise to the iconic Maori Rock Carvings. These impressive carvings, only accessible by boat, make for an unforgettable sight—choose from Chris Jolly Cruises, who have a couple of morning slots available, or hop aboard the iconic Ernest Kemp steam boat. During the 2-hour round trip you'll have plenty of opportunities to take in the incredible vastness of Lake Taupo and snap some amazing pics.

Afternoon

After a fun-filled morning grab lunch some lunch at one of the many nearby cafes and restaurants, before enjoying a gentle stroll through Tongariro Domain. Just backing on to the domain, you'll discover the Taupo Museum and Art Gallery. It's a small but impressive museum that covers Maori culture, art, and the history of the area – a lovely way to get an understanding of Taupo's history.

Evening

After freshening up, make your way to Dixie Brown’s for dinner. With beautiful lake views, a cosy atmosphere, and a fantastic menu, it’s popular among locals and visitors, and the perfect spot to wind down after another busy day of exploring.

Day 4: Day Trip to Tongariro National Park

Morning & Afternoon

Today’s a special day – it’s time for a full-day excursion to Tongariro National Park! Just an hour’s drive from Bella Vista Taupo, Tongariro National Park is home to one of the world’s best day hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

This 19.4 km trek offers a stunning mix of volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and breathtaking panoramic views. Despite its length, it’s a must-do for any outdoor enthusiast and is suitable for anyone with a reasonable fitness level. We recommend getting up and out early to beat the heat of the day and be sure to pack plenty of snacks, a filling lunch, water, and layers – the weather can change quickly up there!

You have a couple of options for reaching the trailhead. You can drive to the Ketetahi Car Park at the end of the track, where you can park your car and catch a shuttle to the starting point, or you can opt for a return shuttle service from Taupo. Operators such as Tongariro Expeditions offer both of these easy services. No matter which option you choose, Tongariro National Park is a place to take your time and soak in the magic.

Evening

After a rewarding day on the trails, return to your Taupo motel in the mid-afternoon for a refresh (and perhaps a power nap) before heading out for a well-deserved meal at Plateau Bar & Eatery. This gem is just a 10-minute walk from Bella Vista and features hearty Kiwi cuisine along with the finest craft beers—just what you need after a day of adventure!

Day 5: Quirky Activities and Ultimate Relaxation Taupo Style

Morning

After yesterday’s adventure, today’s all about taking it easy. Start with a relaxed breakfast at the motel, then head off to the Honey Hive, just a short 10-minute drive north. It’s a fascinating spot with all kinds of honey products, from skincare to jars of the golden goodness to sample—you might find you end up coming away with a number of sweet treats and gifts to take home!

Not far up the road is Lava Glass, a captivating glassblowing studio, sculpture garden, art gallery, and café. It’s the perfect place for art lovers to wander, admire stunning hand-blown pieces, and watch glassblowing demos. Many pieces feature vibrant colours and designs that reflect the artist’s take on New Zealand’s beautiful landscapes. While you’re there, enjoy a cuppa and a bite to eat from the café’s delicious menu, crafted from wholesome local and seasonal produce.

Afternoon

A relaxing afternoon now awaits at Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa, where the natural hot springs along the Waikato River offer a soothing soak in a spa pool surrounded by nature—this is much needed after yesterday's big adventure. Bring a towel and settle in as the warm waters work their magic on those tired muscles, melting away any lingering tension. If you're body needs a little extra love, there are a number of rejuventing treatments to choose from.

Evening

After a slow-paced afternoon, it's time for your final meal of the trip! Head to the eastern end of town to the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club, where you can enjoy wood-fired pizzas on the edge of the lake. Choose the best spot from their range of outdoor seating, unwind right by the water and soak up the last of Taupo’s charm. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a jam-packed, fun-filled few days!
