Franz Josef Glacier Travel Guide: Essential Tips, Itinerary and More from Local Experts
Posted by Bella Vista on
Welcome to our little corner of paradise in Franz Josef Glacier! We're Jim and Cindy, the proud owners of Bella Vista Franz Josef Glacier Motel, and we're excited to share the tips, secrets, and experiences we've gathered during our time here. Whether you're planning your first visit to this stunning part of New Zealand or you're a seasoned traveller to the West Coast, we’ve put together a Franz Josef Glacier travel guide to help make the most of your stay.
Meet Jim and Cindy
We are originally from China, and both moved to New Zealand in 2014 to study Hospitality Management in New Plymouth. Over the years, we have lived and worked in various cities and towns, gaining valuable experience in the hospitality industry.?
In 2019, we made the life-changing move to Franz Josef Glacier, and soon after, we fell in love with its breath-taking scenery and close-knit community. In 2023, we were fortunate enough to fulfill our dream of owning a motel, Bella Vista Franz Josef Glacier, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome guests to the place we now call home.
What Makes Franz Josef Special?
When asked why we love Franz Josef, the answer is simple—it's a place like no other. The Franz Josef Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. You can walk right up to it along well-marked trails or experience it from the air with a helicopter flight. But what really sets it apart is its location in a temperate rainforest—something you won't find with most other glaciers!
The stunning West Coast roads leading to Franz Josef offer some of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and it’s also the perfect escape from the summer heat, making it a popular destination year-round.
Seasonal Tips for Franz Josef
Franz Josef's temperate rainforest climate means you will experience all four seasons, each with its own charm. Here are some essential tips on what to pack and when to visit:
- Comfortable Shoes: Whether you’re trekking through the bush or exploring the glacier, good quality, sturdy footwear is a must.
- Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Summer days are perfect for a helicopter flight or just soaking up the sun when you’re out and about. Don’t forget to protect your eyes and skin with sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Umbrella or Raincoat: Franz Josef is part of a temperate rainforest, so rain is common throughout the year. Be prepared, especially if you're heading out to see the glacier.
- Bug Repellent: While sandflies aren't usually a problem in town, if you're venturing into the bush or close to the riverside or beach in the late afternoon, insect repellent will be your best friend.
- Summer vs Winter: While summer is the busiest time to visit, Franz Josef is an all-season destination. For the best weather, we recommend outdoor activities in the morning, as it's usually the calmest time of day.
Our Favourite Local Spots to Recommend
There are plenty of things to do in Franz Josef - even though it’s small, it’s a vibrant and welcoming town. Here are a few of our top recommendations:
- Glacier Valley Walk: A short, easy walk from the Glacier Valley car park. It’s suitable for all ages and offers amazing views of the glacier.
- Waiho Hot Tubs: After a day of adventure, soak in the hot tub to relax and unwind while enjoying views of the stunning surroundings.
- Lake Mapourika: For a peaceful experience, take a trip to this serene lake, where you can enjoy kayaking or simply take in the area's beauty.
Unique Activities about Franz Josef
While Franz Josef is famous for its glacier and natural beauty, there are a few hidden gems that most travel guides don’t mention:
Stargazing
On clear nights, Franz Josef offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in New Zealand, especially in winter. Head to Lake Mapourika, just a 10-minute drive, to escape light pollution and enjoy the stunning Milky Way.
Waiho River Bank
A peaceful spot just north of the town, offering beautiful views over the glacier valley and an easy walk.
St. James Church
Located just 10 minutes from our Franz Josef motel, the St James Church is a quaint church offers a serene setting with spectacular views of the glacier valley. Bonus tip: if you visit after dusk, you may spot some glowworms near the church’s entrance.
Car Show (September/October)
Franz Josef comes alive every year with a unique car show featuring V8s, classic cars, and motorbikes. It's a fun way to experience the local culture and meet car enthusiasts from all over New Zealand.

48-Hour Itinerary for Franz Josef
If you're planning a visit to Franz Josef, we highly recommend staying for at least 48 hours to make the most of your time here. Day 1 - A Dry Day Plan
- Morning: Start with an unforgettable helicopter ride or Heli Hike to explore the Franz Josef Glacier up close. This is one of the best ways to experience the glacier and see the stunning views from above.
- Brunch: After your adventure, head to a local café like SnakeBite Restaurant or Full of Beans Café to enjoy a relaxing meal and recharge.
- Midday Walk: Take a leisurely walk to St. James Church or enjoy the views along the riverbank. On a clear day, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
- Afternoon: If you're feeling adventurous, book a kayak tour at Lake Mapourika with Franz Josef Wilderness Tours. The crystal-clear waters and surrounding forest make for an unforgettable experience.
- Evening: After an action-packed day, unwind with a relaxing soak at the Waiho Hot Tubs, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Then, enjoy a delicious dinner at Alice May Restaurant, just next door to the motel.
Day 2 - A Rainy Day Plan

- Morning: Book a tour with Glacier Valley Eco Tours for a walk through the rainforest. This small-group experience includes a knowledgeable local guide, and you'll get to explore waterfalls, rivers, and spectacular glacier views—suitable for all ages.
- Afternoon: For some shelter from the rain, visit the Wildlife Centre across the road from our Franz Josef motel to see New Zealand’s rarest Kiwi bird.?
- Evening: After another day of exploring, a second visit to the Waiho Hot Tubs wouldn’t hurt! It can be a very grounding experience sitting in the tub, listening to the rain.
