Discover the 9 Best Things to Do in Westport, New Zealand
Posted by Bella Vista on
Nestled on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Westport is a hidden gem packed with history, adventure, and unspoiled scenery. From rugged coastlines and historic mining sites to stunning limestone arches and scenic biking trails, this charming town offers something for every kind of traveller.
Whether you're keen to explore dramatic landscapes, learn about the region’s gold and coal-mining heritage, or simply enjoy some great local food, Westport is the destination for you. To help you make the most of your visit, here are nine of the best things to do in and around Westport.
1. Explore the Historic Denniston Incline
A visit to the Denniston Incline is a journey into Westport’s fascinating coal-mining past. Just 30 minutes from our Westport motel, this historic site was once described as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was home to New Zealand’s steepest railway incline, used to transport coal down the rugged hillside. The site offers a powerful glimpse into the harsh conditions miners faced while working in this remote and unforgiving landscape.
As you walk along the old tracks and explore the remnants of the settlement, you’ll gain a real sense of what life was like for those who lived and worked here. The positive of this area being so high? The views are absolutely spectacular!
2. Discover the Museum of Kawatiri
For a deeper dive into Westport’s rich history, a visit to the Museum of Kawatiri (formerly Coaltown Museum) is a must. Located in the heart of town, "Kawatiri" is the Maori name for Westport, museum provides a fascinating look into the town’s industrial and social heritage.
The museum’s engaging exhibits focus on coal mining, which played a crucial role in Westport’s development. You’ll find interactive displays, historic photographs, and life-sized reconstructions that bring the tough conditions of early miners to life. One of the standout exhibits is the replica of a coal mine tunnel, where you can experience the challenges faced by miners working deep underground.
3. Visit the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes
Just a 50-minute drive from our Westport motel lies the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, one of the most famous natural attractions on the West Coast. These layered limestone formations, shaped over millions of years, resemble stacks of pancakes—hence the name! Enjoy a stroll along the 20-minute loop track to admire them up close. When the tide is high, the blowholes put on an incredible show as seawater surges through the rock formations, sending dramatic sprays into the air. It’s a unique and unforgettable sight, which is well worth the trip.
4. Go Caving and Rafting with UnderWorld Adventures
For an exciting underground adventure, Underworld Adventures in Charleston offers an incredible mix of caving and rafting. Just 20 minutes from the heart of Westport, you'll explore fascinating limestone formations, drift through glowworm-lit caverns, and experience the magic of an untouched underground world. Whether you're a thrill-seeker or just looking for something different, this guided tour is an amazing way to discover the hidden landscapes beneath the West Coast and is perfect for visitors of all ages.
5. Walk or Bike the Scenic Trails
Westport is a haven for outdoor lovers, with a plethora of fantastic walking and mountain biking tracks to choose from. A couple of special mentions:
The Old Ghost Road is a legendary 85 km multi-day trail that takes hikers and mountain bikers deep into New Zealand’s remote backcountry. Originally a 19th-century gold-mining route, it now offers an incredible journey through rugged mountains, lush valleys, native forests, and historic mining relics. The full trail typically takes 4–5 days to hike or 2–3 days to bike, with backcountry huts available along the way for overnight stays.
If you’re after a more leisurely experience, the Kawatiri Trail provides a gentle cycling and walking option. This 50km scenic trail network connects Westport to Charleston, winding through coastal landscapes, native bush, and estuaries. Perfect for families and casual riders, the trails are easily accessible from Westport and can be enjoyed in shorter sections at your own pace.
6. Taste the Local Flavours
No trip is complete without sampling the local food, and Westport has some delicious options. West Coast Pie Co is famous for its freshly baked, handmade wild meat pies—we're talking everything from wild venison to cumin spiced wild tahr.
Another West Coast specialty is the whitebait patty sandwich—freshly caught whitebait, lightly mixed with egg, and fried to perfection before being served between slices of buttered white bread. Simple yet delicious, this classic West Coast treat is a must-try if you're visiting during whitebait season.
And of course, after a day of exploring, there's nothing better than a hearty meal and a refreshing drink. The Denniston Dog is the perfect spot for those craving classic pub fare, great service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. If you’d prefer to dine with a beachfront view, Donaldos is another fantastic choice, offering heart meals with coastal scenery.
7. Step Back in Time in Reefton
Just a short drive from Westport, Reefton is a historic gold-mining town with a fascinating past. In 1888, it became the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have electric street lighting. Today, Reefton is full of character, with beautifully preserved heritage buildings, a charming main street, and plenty of stories to uncover. Stop by the Bearded Miners’ Hut for a glimpse into the life of early prospectors, or visit the local museum to learn about Reefton’s golden era.
8. Explore the Oparara Basin Arches
If you're up for a day trip, a scenic two-hour drive up the coast will lead you to a truly remarkable destination—the Oparara Basin Arches. Tucked away in Kahurangi National Park and hidden within lush native forest, these stunning limestone formations feature dramatic natural arches, caves, and tunnels sculpted over millions of years. The highlight is the enormous Oparara Limestone Arches, a breathtaking structure that feels like stepping into another world. With its natural beauty and unique geological features, this is a must-visit for those looking to explore the West Coast's untamed wilderness.
9. Visit the Cape Foulwind Walkway and Seal Colony
Another must-do activity in Westport is visiting Cape Foulwind, a stunning coastal area offering sweeping views and a chance to see New Zealand fur seals up close. The Cape Foulwind Walkway is an easy 7.8 km return track, only 10 minutes from our Westport motel, that takes you along dramatic cliffs with panoramic ocean views.
At the Tauranga Bay seal colony, just 15 minutes from the Tauranga Bay carpark, you can watch these playful creatures basking on the rocks, especially during the breeding season (November to January).
If you decide to do the full 2h return trip, you won't be disappointed, as the lighthouse at Cape Foulwind offers a great photo opportunity and insight into the maritime history of the region.
