When these cold temperatures head our way there is nothing quite like soaking our bodies in a heaven sent hot pool. Easing away all our aches and pains and taking some time out to relax from our busy lives.

We’ve searched high and low to put together our pick of the top ten hot pools in New Zealand using the best recommendations of our Bella Vista moteliers. For all you need to know of the best places to soak, where to stay and how to get there – take a read below!
 

Kerosene Creek – Rotorua/Taupo

We’re going to let you in on a bit of a secret with this one, located on the road between Rotorua and Taupo is a very special place – Kerosene Creek.  To get there head south from Rotorua, about 0.5km past the Murupara turnoff is Old Waiotapu Rd, it’s approximately 2.2km down this road.

Waiting for you when you arrive is an unbelievable hot springs experience, a basic corrugated iron shed has been built to accommodate bathers changing and once you’re all sorted you’ll jump into a natural hot pool in a surreal bush setting. It doesn't get much better than this, so relax and take in the raw back country beauty of this little gem.

Polynesian Spa – Rotorua

AC Baths – Taupo

This one is ideal for the whole family, in fact, AC Baths are almost a rite of passage for kiwi kids young and old. AC Baths offers an awesome all-weather, family-friendly pool complex. There are hours of fun to be had with a large outdoor pool, two toddler areas, two 25-metre lane pools, an indoor learn to swim pool, two hydroslides, a Tarzan swing, four private thermal mineral pools, a sauna and a delicious café. All of the pools in the complex are thermally heated using natural hot water. It’s a wonderful day out for all, so put this one on the to-do list for sure.

The perfect place to book your Taupo motel is Bella Vista Taupo, it’s an easy 4 minute drive to the AC baths and wonderfully central to Taupo activities and dining.
 

Te Aroha Mineral Springs – Te Aroha

The waters of Te Aroha have played a famous role in health and healing for over 100 years. The mineral spring flowing from beneath Mt Te Aroha provides the source to these magical hot springs, and this relatively unknown hot pools complex offers a quieter, more intimate soak. The mineral salts in the natural spring water are therapeutic, and for bathing, you have the choice of porcelain claw-foot baths or one of the many traditional wooden tubs. Glacier Hot Pools – Franz Josef Glacier

If you’re looking for something that’s next level memorable, you’ll need to visit the Glacier Hot Pools in Franz Josef Glacier. This has to be one of the most unique hot pool experiences you can get, set in a rainforest on New Zealand’s West Coast these pools are a haven of tranquillity. Three pools weave their way through the lush forest where nature has set the temperature between 36 – 40 degrees centigrade.  Buy a single entry or a day long pass depending on your mood and head along to discover Te Puna Mahaki – The pool of calmness, Te Puna Makoha – The pool of tranquillity and Te Puna Marino – The pool of serenity, all named by the local Maori tribe.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa

People come from near and far to relax in this beautiful setting. Take some time to appreciate the views around you, as every which way you turn it’s postcard like mountains or native forest. Hanmer is the epitome of relaxation and these pools go a long way to contribute to this.  There’s something for everyone here with private pools, rock pools, sulphur pools, kids pools, hydroslides, you name it!! The natural beauty of this location allows you to escape from reality and enjoy the healing waters of these pools.

Morere Hot Springs – Gisborne

Soaking in the heated ancient seawaters of Morere Hot Springs is something pretty magical. Set amongst 364 hectares of lush rainforest, the hot springs are piped to a series of private and public pools for all to enjoy. Therapeutic, medicinal and unforgettable, make sure you BYO BBQ food to make a day of it and don’t forget to try out the spectacular rainforest walks in the area when you need a break from the water.

Onsen Hot pools – Queenstown

Queenstown has exceeded itself yet again with an out of this world hot pools facility in a breathtaking location, with views out over the Shotover River Canyon. You’ll find true relaxation calling, as you take a break from the hustle bustle of exploring and partaking in Queenstown adventures, or perhaps it’s an evening trip to the pools after a day skiing on the Queenstown mountains. The cedar hot tubs at Onsen each comfortably seat four people, and once you’re in you’ll not want to get out ever again! Don’t forget to book in advance for this one to ensure you don’t miss out.

Ngawha Springs Hot Pools – Kaikohe

Another well-kept secret that only a few are privy to is the tranquil Ngawha Springs in the Northland region. Located in an area rich in culture, kind locals and peaceful surroundings, the hot springs in this area are top notches. Slightly acidic and rich in ammonia, bicarbonate, boron and mercury (which is not typical of other springs in New Zealand) every one of the 15 pools is sourced by an individual spring, dictating its own temperature (some hot, some cold). The pools also vary in colour and clarity, determined by the mineral composition and individual underground source. When one of the pools is called ‘The Doctor’ you get a real understanding of the health and well-being properties available here.

If you book in and stay at Bella Vista Whangarei you can be changed and sit in one of the Ngawha Springs Hot Pools in just over an hour.

Maruia Hot Springs – Lewis Pass

As far as boutique hot pools are concerned, this one’s got it in the bag. Utilising the 100% pure geothermal spring water of the area and generating all of their own hydro-power, the mind and body will slip away into utter relaxation. Maruia offers views of the surrounding Southern Alps and an eco-wellness experience like no other. With 19 Wellness Stations situated across both the indoor and outdoor areas to enjoy, for a complete ‘wellness journey’ allow at least 2.5 hours.

Take your pick of Bella Vista accommodation options for a visit to Mauia Hot Springs – Bella Vista Nelson, Bella Vista Christchurch, Bella Vista Hanmer Springs or Bella Vista Greymouth are all within driving distance.

When the majority of us think of Christchurch our minds are automatically drawn to the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. So much has happened since then, Christchurch is well and truly back and ready to share its story with the world. We’ve put together the perfect 48-hour tour to help you get the most out of the Garden City.

Christchurch is a fascinating, vibrant and as we know resilient city, it’s a place that you could and should spend many days exploring, but if you’re only here for a couple of days, try and tick off as many of these as you can.

Day One:

9.30 a.m. Brunch

Start the day off at a leisurely pace with the best coffee in town. We suggest The Caffeine Laboratory. The food selection at The here is top notch, and you’ll be hard pressed to choose only one item off their brunch menu. Once your meal has been delivered to the table you’ll understand our recommendation, as the food is beautifully presented and seriously delivers on taste.

11.00 a.m. Reflect on the Quake

For many New Zealanders visiting Christchurch is bitter sweet, there’s a genuine sense of sadness and loss for what was, but also true admiration and hope both for the city and it’s locals. We’ve selected a few options for those that want to learn and understand more about the earthquakes.

Quake City – Here you will discover all there is to know about the Christchurch earthquakes; the destruction caused, stories of bravery and locals working together, you’ll view images of the wreckage, see up close many iconic objects that have been salvaged and learn about the plans for the city’s future. Re:Start Mall, 99 Cashel Street, daily 10am – 5pm.

Christchurch Rebuild Tour – This 90 minute bus tour will highlight the damage caused by the earthquakes, talk of the transitional projects that were required and learn of the plans for the future. It’s a good way to get your bearings and see for yourself the areas that were worst hit. Daily departure, outside Canterbury Museum, 11.30am.

185 Chairs – Earthquake Remembrance Art Installation. While still on the hunt for a permanent location, 185 Chairs is a public artwork and memorial to the 185 victims of the Christchurch earthquake.  It’s a moving place to visit and really puts into perspective the sadness of the lives that were lost. St Paul's Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Church site, corner of Cashel and Madras Streets.

2.00 p.m.  Head to the Botanic Gardens

We've allocated 90 minutes to stroll along to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and appreciate this true oasis in the middle of the city. It's not long enough but hey, you're on a timeframe! Here you’ll view the well-planned collection of different gardens, exotic plants, trees, and indoor varieties.  You’ll no doubt want to spend a while checking out the gardens, but once you’ve had your fix, make your way to Cambridge Terrace for a river punting experience.

3.30 p.m. Punting on the Avon

It’s about as Christchurch as it gets! You’ll sit back and relax in the hand crafted flat bottom boats, as your Edwardian dressed punter in full attire (stripes, blazer and boater hat) points out the landmarks and highlights of the city. This is such a fabulous option any time of the year, with blankets, umbrellas and even hot water bottles available if needed.

7.00 p.m. Christchurch Tramway Restaurant

You’ll no doubt have worked up quite an appetite by now, so tonight enjoy a unique and completely ‘Christchurch’ way to dine. The Tramway Restaurant sees you seated in a colonial style dining tram, where you’re served up the very best in local cuisine and wines, plus experience an after dark sightseeing tour. It’s a must do on a visit to Christchurch, but remember to book in early to make sure you don’t miss out.
 

Day 2:

10.00 a.m. Christchurch Gondola

Have a light breakfast before you leave your Christchurch motel and then make your way out of the city to the Christchurch Gondola. The ride up is enjoyable and sees you ascend Mt Cavendish in the Port Hills, once you reach the top the uninterrupted 360-degree views over the city, port, Southern Alps, and beyond are spectacular. 

There’s plenty to keep you busy at the top, the Time Tunnel ride will teach you about the history of the region, a café for your morning coffee, and perhaps take the opportunity to explore the Mountain Bike or walking trails. If you don’t have your own transport the Gondola Shuttle operates daily from the Canterbury Museum.

1.00 p.m. International Antarctic Centre

Now’s time for something a bit different and we think pretty special! And this city is the only place you can do it - unless of course you’re planning a trip to Antarctica.  The International Antarctic Centre is a fun and interactive experience that will make you feel like you’re really there.  View Little Blue Penguins, experience an actual Antarctic storm (appropriate clothing provided), and learn facts and stories about what life’s like in Antarctica, plus no Antarctic experience is complete without a Hagglund ride.

4.00 p.m. Hagley Park

By now you’ll probably need a bit of a break from playing tourist. Head over to Hagley Park to breathe in some fresh air and appreciate this wide-open space in the middle of the city. Hagley Park has been part of Christchurch lives since the 1850's, gifted to the city for the enjoyment of the residents. The beautifully maintained park offers so much for all - a lake, tennis courts, sports fields, walking and running tracks and picnic spots, plus much more. From there make your way back to Bella Vista Christchurch to freshen up before dinner.

7.30 p.m. Café Valentino

Sadly your time in Christchurch is coming to an end, and perhaps the most fitting place to finish up is at the Christchurch institution, Café Valentino. This buzzing restaurant hotspot serves up mouth-watering dishes, pizza, pasta and a Torte di miele to die for. It’s the ultimate in Italian food and is all packaged up in a fun atmosphere with food prepared to perfection. Mama Mia!

Thinking of heading to Christchurch? Here's a rundown as to how to spend two days in the celebrated Garden City with Christchurch Bella Vista Motel & Apartments.

Upon arrival at Christchurch Airport, make sure you pick up a rental car to make the most of the region and the city.It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the airport to the central city.  Bella Vista Motel Christchurch is on Bealey Avenue well placed to explore both the City and surrounds.  There are many attractions within walking distance and Bella Vista offers free on-site car parking.

In the evening you could check out events at the Isaac Theatre Royal and catch a touring musician, comedian or performer.  This heritage venue reopened in late 2014 and the rebuild of the interior stayed true to what it looked like prior to the infamous 2011 earthquake.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens comprise of 30 hectares and are an enjoyable way to spend some time amongst the native and exotic plants.  There are plenty of walks through the gardens which are bordered by the Avon River and Hagley Park.  Spring is a great time to take in the Daffodil Woodland in full bloom.  Also check out the Visitor Centre which opened in 2014 and is a visually interesting multipurpose space inspired by glasshouse. This is a lovely 30 minute walk through the city into the centre of the park from our motel accommodation in Christchurch. 

Punting on the Avon is next up.  You can follow the river through the Botanic Gardens or through the City.  The 30 minute round trip on a locally made wooden punt comes with commentary from an Edwardian themed punter.  The Botanic Gardens route launches from the Antigua Boat Sheds, 2 Cambridge Terrace, which have been beside the Avon River since 1882.  The sheds, which are Category 1 historic buildings, survived a fire in 1907, as well as the 2010/11 earthquakes.  Inside you will find some old time memorabilia including a line-up of blazers that have been collected over time from local high schools.  This is also the place to hire a kayak, row boat, or Canadian canoe if you want to navigate the river yourself.
 

The afternoon may be a good time to drive out to the suburb of Woolston for some lunch and retail therapy.  The Tannery, 3 Garlands Road, is a boutique shopping and dining destination.  With a focus on recyclable and renewable materials, brickwork that was damaged in the February 22, 2011 earthquake has been restored as a façade on the rebuilt buildings.  There is an emphasis on local products here.  Try the award-winning Cassels & Sons craft beer at The Brewery.  If wine is more your thing, neighbouring Gustav’s Kitchen & Wine Bar has one of the largest wine lists in the Country. 

The Woolston area has a connection to the arts.  Kiwi reggae band Salmonella Dub recorded an album here; other musicians have used The Tannery for album launches.

Then head for the Port Hills and take a gondola (cable car) ride, 10 Bridle Path Road, to the top.  From almost 500 metres above sea level, you will see Canterbury laid out before your eyes.  Look out at the Southern Alps, Banks Peninsula, Lake Ellesmere, Lyttelton Harbour, Pegasus Bay, the Pacific Ocean and Kaikoura Peninsula. It's only 20 mins drive from the Christchurch motel nz for a little R&R before getting a bite to eat. 

For an evening meal make your way towards the area around Victoria and Madras streets and Worcester Boulevard  and within that area you will find plenty of dining and bar options for a night out.

After a good nights sleep at the Bella Vista motel ease into the day with a walk through The Commons, on the corner of Kilmore and Durham Streets.  The vacant lot is a hub of transitional activity and home to the Downtown Farmers Market.

A car trip to New Brighton is interesting.  The New Brighton Pier is the biggest ocean pier in Australasia.  After that, the Southern Pegasus Bay track takes you along most of the shoreline in both directions and offers up many photograph opportunities.
 

The Beach Cafe, on the corner of Beach and Broadpark roads is a buzzing neighbourhood that is a great spot to refuel. 

Back in the CBD, the transitional work is worth a look.   The Transitional Cardboard Cathedral constructed on the site of the former St John’s Latimer Square Anglican Church and the ReStart Mall, made from shipping containers are two examples of the innovative ways Christchurch is moving forward.

Then take a look at the Christchurch Art Gallery in Worcester Boulevard where the city’s latest public artwork has been installed.  The 46 metre long work was created for the city by the prestigious British artist Martin Creed and tells one and all, in neon letters more than metre tall, that everything is going to be alright.
